Start with the right sections, in the right order

A modern CV has a predictable skeleton: contact details, a short professional summary, work experience, education, and skills. Optional sections — certifications, languages, volunteering, projects — come after, only if they add value for the role.

Order by relevance. Experienced candidates lead with work history; students and fresh graduates lead with education and projects. Whatever's strongest goes in the top third of the page, because that's all most recruiters read before deciding.

Open with a summary that earns the next ten seconds

Under your name and contact line, write two to four sentences: who you are, your standout strengths, and what you're aiming for. Lead with value, not adjectives — "Marketing specialist with 5 years growing e-commerce revenue" beats "hard-working team player."

Tailor this summary to each application by echoing the job title and the top requirement from the posting. It's the single highest-impact paragraph on the page.

Turn experience into achievements, not duties

List each role newest first: job title, company, location, dates. Under each, write three to five bullets — but describe results, not responsibilities. "Responsible for support" says nothing; "Cut average response time by 31% across a team of six" proves impact.

Start every bullet with a strong verb and add a number wherever you honestly can. Numbers make you concrete and memorable.

Keep formatting clean, honest, and ATS-safe

Use one simple, single-column layout, a standard font, one accent color, and consistent dates. Skip tables, text boxes, and graphics that confuse applicant tracking systems. Keep it to one or two pages of relevant, recent experience, and export as PDF.

Never exaggerate or invent — it surfaces in interviews and reference checks. Proofread twice, then have someone else read it. Leave out salary history, political affiliations, and unrelated personal details.
