What Word templates do well

Pick a single-column layout with no text boxes, no tables, and no photo placeholders. Use standard fonts (Calibri, Arial, Georgia). Use Word's built-in heading styles for section names. Save as PDF before sending unless .docx is explicitly required — and test the result by copy-pasting the PDF text into a plain text editor: if it comes out in the right order, the ATS will read it too.
