How to Write a CV for the Gulf Job Market (GCC)

5 min read

The Gulf is one of the world's most active job markets, drawing applicants from across the globe. But a CV that works in Europe or North America needs adjusting for the GCC. Here's what employers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman expect.

Personal details are more common here

The biggest adjustment for a Gulf CV is that personal details Western CVs deliberately omit are often expected here. Whereas a UK or US CV leaves off photos and personal data to avoid bias, GCC employers in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman commonly look for your nationality, and frequently a professional headshot, your visa or iqama status, and sometimes date of birth and marital status. Nationality and visa status matter most, because they tell an employer the practical logistics and cost of hiring you — whether you need sponsorship, a transfer, or are already eligible to work locally. Include them near the top where they're easy to find, kept factual and brief. Norms vary by country and seniority, so when a posting or recruiter signals otherwise, follow that — but as a default, a Gulf CV that surfaces nationality and visa status saves the employer a question and keeps your application moving.

English is standard, Arabic is a plus

For most private-sector and multinational roles in the Gulf, an English CV is the norm. Strong Arabic is a real advantage and worth highlighting, and for some local or government roles an Arabic CV is preferred. A bilingual presence widens your reach.

Highlight international and transferable experience

The Gulf workforce is highly international, so employers value adaptability and cross-cultural experience. Make your relevant qualifications and certifications easy to verify, and clarify any that are internationally recognized — it speeds up screening.

Stay ATS-friendly and professional

Large Gulf employers and recruitment agencies rely heavily on applicant tracking systems, so keep your CV clean, single-column, and keyword-matched to the posting. A formal, polished presentation is expected across the region.
